🏍️ Navigating the Legal Aspects of Selling Your Motorcycle

A quick guide for South African sellers (when selling to a dealer)
Selling your bike to a dealer like Bike Worth is the fastest way to turn your motorcycle into cash — but there are still a few legal boxes to tick. Here’s what you need to know to keep it simple, safe, and 100% above board.
✅ THE BASICS — WHAT YOU’LL ALWAYS NEED
· Vehicle Registration Certificate (logbook)
· Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO) form
· Certified ID copy + proof of address
· Roadworthy Certificate (if required)
· Full disclosure — let the dealer know if the bike is financed or in someone else’s name
💰 IF THE BIKE IS UNDER FINANCE
· Get a settlement letter from your bank or finance house
· The dealer usually pays the bank directly to clear the loan
· Don’t hand over the logbook until the bank confirms settlement
· Ask for a release letter once finance is cleared
📝 You can’t legally transfer full ownership until the finance is settled.
👥 IF THE BIKE IS IN SOMEONE ELSE’S NAME
· You’ll need a Letter of Authority from the registered owner
· Include certified ID copies of both parties
· The dealer will keep these on file for compliance
💡 A WhatsApp message or informal note isn’t enough — written authority is essential.
🏢 IF THE BIKE BELONGS TO A COMPANY OR TRUST
· Company: Provide registration papers + a board resolution naming who may sell
· Trust: Provide the trustee resolution authorising the sale
· Always include certified IDs of the authorised signatories
⚙️ Only authorised representatives can sign the NCO and sale documents.
⚰️ IF THE BIKE IS FROM A DECEASED ESTATE
· Only the executor (appointed by the Master of the High Court) can sell
· Provide Letters of Executorship and executor’s ID
· Ensure all finance or estate debts are cleared before transfer
